Melanie Wappett – Senior Solicitor

Melanie Wappett specialises in the areas of Estate Planning, Property, Superannuation and Small Business.

Melanie was admitted to practice as a solicitor in December 1994.

She holds a Commerce Degree and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales and is in the process of obtaining her Masters Degree in Wills and Estate Planning from the College of Law.

Following admission as a solicitor, Melanie practised for over five years as a general commercial and property lawyer in a large law firm, ultimately specialising in Information Technology and Telecommunications Law.  She subsequently moved to an in-house legal role with Optus, a role she held for over six years.  In her role at Optus, Melanie was the primary legal counsel for its business division advising on large outsourcing contracts, business to business contracting and general commercial contracts.  Melanie was also the primary legal counsel for the company’s network rollout division which involved utilising her legal knowledge in a vast array of general property transactions such as leasing and property purchases, as well as large scale network rollout contracts and joint ventures with commercial and government partners.  She also assisted its consumer division by revising the company’s standard form consumer contracts following the introduction of new laws regulating unfair contract terms.  In performing these roles, Melanie was involved in advising the company on the regulatory and legal aspects of operating its business and in doing so liaised with all key divisions of the company including risk, tax, and strategy, providing her with invaluable insights into the operation of one of Australia’s largest listed companies.

Whilst raising her three children, Melanie worked as a volunteer for a charity which established a primary school and orphanage in Kenya.  She also expanded on the knowledge gained in her commerce degree by working for a small family run business assisting with accounts and general business management.

Since joining Santone Lawyers in 2014, Melanie has drawn on her extensive commercial and property experience, practising in areas of Property, Superannuation and general Business Law with a particular interest in advising clients on the operation of self-managed super funds and small business transactions.  She also assists the firm by acting in Family Law matters (particularly complex property matters).

Melanie manages the firm’s Estate Planning practice, handling general probate and estate matters and has acted on a number of cases in the Supreme Court of New South Wales involving family provision claims.

When not working at Santone Lawyers, Melanie spends her time managing a busy household of three children and a small but vivacious dog.  To relax she enjoys tennis, cooking and spending time with friends and family.
